People pop their pimples because they feel the pimples make them look ugly. They believe that the pimples will go away faster. However, this is not true. Dermatologists have found that most people who have severe, big pimples frequently pop their pimples. Popping pimples do not make pimples go away faster; in fact, it can make the pimples become bigger. Moreover, popping pimples can lead to permanent scarring and dark spots.
Your hands, fingers and nails are filled with bacteria. These bacteria won’t be completely killed by normal soap and water. Popping pimples will make a hole in your skin, opening a wound in the inner skin. Germs can then infect your inner skin which can lead to inflammation of the wound. Permanent scarring can result from opening a deep hole in your skin, and severe cases can lead to acne outbreak.
With that said, it will be a different case if the pimple is whitish and it may help by popping it. This is usually the final stage of the healing, and you can see pus in the pimple.
Here are the steps to correctly pop pimples:
- Thoroughly wash and clean your hands and face with water.
- Prepare a sterilized pin and clean cloth with disinfectant alcohol.
- Use the pin to gently poke the pimples and let the pus come out. (Important: Stop immediately if it does not burst. If the pimple is reddish, popping it would only make it bigger.)
- Wipe the area with the alcohol cloaked cloth.
To conclude, popping pimples is not very effective, but if the pimples are whitish and affect your appearance a lot, then it is okay to pop them. I highly recommend not to pop pimples. If you absolutely must pop them, keep the following points in mind: never pop pimples with your hands and do not pop when the pimples are reddish.
